All photography has a story. The Doves Over Cuba is an image I’ve been asked about many times. Is that Photoshopped? Was it against a white wall? Where was this exactly in Havana, how’d you find that shot? I love the challenge it takes sometimes to get an image I like and I want to share, this one fits into that category. Taken on a rooftop on my trip in 2014, the 5th or 6th floor of a crumbling building we traveled up equipped with our iPhone flashlights to see in pitch black darkness, we held our breath just a little to navigate the decaying concrete stairway allowing our anticipation and excitement to fuel our final steps. The view at the top is breathtaking, the Jesus de Maria Church and the Havana skyline as far as the eye can see. We are there for the private party organized for our group and to photograph the trained doves who live up there. Once out of the coop, they wait patiently for their caregivers to give a loud clap. They fly several wide circles around the church before coming back to the ledge where they wait for another clap. This final image was taken on the very last take off, right when the setting sun began to burst through the clouds giving us this magic light. I have no idea how many shots I took before, but it was a heck of a lot! I’m glad I got this one, and one is all it takes.
